Muay Thai Outfit and Equipment

When it comes to Muay Thai training, preparing your outfit and equipment is essential.

Muay Thai outfit and equipment have developed over the years. There were no formal rules of how Muay Thau practitioners should dress in the past. However, at present, both amateurs and professionals are advised to wear a certain type of outfit and use specialized equipment. Here are the 9 pieces of equipment you need to get started.

  • Muay Thai Shorts
  • Wearing Muay Thai shorts is the first element that sparks the fighter spirit in you. Muay Thai shorts are made with enough room in the thigh and groin area in order for you to kick freely. The shorts usually contain unique patterns or vibrant colors. Traditionally, the colors represent the boxer’s side and the wording (if any) should not be rude or offensive to the opponent. Fashion brands have adopted Muay Thai shorts to their clothing collection in the past year such as Versace’s Fall/Winter 2019 collection. Models strutted down the catwalk in what Versace called ‘silk boxer shorts’ paired with blazers. Apart from that, Selena Gomez, a well-known pop singer, wore a pair of Muay Thai pants at her concert in Bangkok. 6IX9INE, a rapper, was also spotted with a woman wearing a pair of Muay Thai shorts in the States. Muay Thai shorts are beyond sports apparel, but now a fashion icon. TUFF Muaythai boxing shorts offer various collections of both men, women, and kids boxing training shorts such as TUFF Muay Thai Boxing Shorts Pink Sakura with Nightingale Bird and TUFF Muay Thai Boxing Shorts Orange Cruel Tiger.

  • Gloves and Hand Wraps
  • Throwing punches, especially with your bare hands is very dangerous. So, gloves are very important because they protect your hands and your boxing partner. It’s always recommended that you wear hand wraps whenever you’re wearing a pair of boxing gloves. This ensures that you have extra protection when you’re training. Every punch creates sudden pressure on up to 27 small bones that form the hand. To prevent injury, fighters use hand wraps.

Hand wraps are rolls of fabric wrapped around the hand as a layer to prevent injury. They support the hand in a way boxing gloves can’t, making sure that there is no accidental movement in the wrist or hand. 4 key areas to focus on when wrapping your hand, – wrist, knuckles, thumb, and in between the fingers. Learning to wrap your hand quickly might be a hassle, but after getting used to it and having your own wrapping technique, you will be ready to punch within seconds!

  • Mouthguard
  • Bruises and wounds could be healed with time, but teeth could not be regrown or healed. Mouthguards help protect your teeth.  Mouthguards don’t prevent knockouts or concussions, but they help absorb the shock, protecting the teeth from punching impacts. There are numerous types of mouthguards. The boil-and-bite kind is commonly used among amateurs. Thus, it does not fit entirely well, which is why professional boxers get custom fit mouthguards for a more comfortable and tighter fit.

  • Groin Guard
  • Groin guard is usually compulsory in Muay Thai competitions to ensure the boxers’ ultimate safety. A groin kick intentionally or unintentionally could be very painful for a man. However, regardless of gender, woman boxers would wear the groin guard for additional protection as well. Safety first!
